File extension mdi information

Microsoft Document Image files are a tag-based graphics that are used by the MS office suite to share files across the entire software package from one application to another. However, it is recommended that the files be converted to the TIFF format so that they become compatible with the Document Imaging programs from previous versions and with other third-party applications that may need to access the Microsoft Document Imaging utility. The file format can however be converted to word documents by use of any optical character recognition software.
Being a raster image, MDI is actually a data structure that is stored as an image file that comes in varying formats. These files are usually resolution-dependent. This means that once the files are enlarged they will not reflect the same clarity they would have in their original size. However, the file format is used to give better and more practical resolution to photo-realistic and photographs. Since the format is a proprietary format that has hidden specifications by Microsoft, only selected Microsoft software products can produce or read the format.
